Growing from an idea born in 2020 lockdown, with birth photographers unable to attend births I couldn’t think of any better way to honour birth photography than to create a revolutionary new competition. The Birth Photographer of the Year is not simply another photography competition – this is next level.

Yes, the winner’s images need to be mind blowing and technically top-notch but there’s so much more. The Birth Photographer of the Year needs to provide information such as business reviews and letters of recommendation to really show the judges that as well as being superstar photographers, they are a savvy, sustainable business owner. They need to be someone their industry holds up as a pinnacle of excellence. This is why our judging is done live and only consists of peers who have undergone hours and hours of training to ensure the standard is clear.

Our inaugural competition blew us away in many ways – the number of entries in what was a difficult time, the calibre of the images, the quality of the judging and the international press and recognition it gained. So, with that all in mind, we’re back for 2022 and we’re making it better and bigger with everyone’s favourite live-streaming judging, a new kick-ass interactive website AND an opportunity for sponsors to jump on board.

As a niche, due to the raw and primal nature of birth photography, we find it difficult to ‘fit in’ to other competitions.

For no other reason than society hasn’t been exposed to birth in this way. It is no ones fault. However we deeply desire to change the narrative around birth. We use our imagery to inspire other birthing people on options and to prompt them to ask themselves some really hard questions, with one of them being- “What do I want MY birth to look like.”

What we love the most is that in some parts of the world, retaining a birth photographer and doula is now becoming the norm. It is a standard part of the process for preparing for birth. We are so thrilled that families are taking their birth experiences seriously. I think as a whole we are becoming more aware of how trauma shapes us- particularly in the birth space. It shapes how we bond with our children, how we parent, how we engage in relationships and even with our partners. I believe that birth photography helps to heal a bad birth and extend the high of a good one.

This is EXACTLY why I wanted to create an event specifically to honour birth. Not only is judging birth particularly difficult, it is also emotionally and physically exhilarating. For this reason, I wanted to create a space on the internet to honour our birth photographers, who are forfeiting sleep, birthdays, holidays and a so-called ‘normal’ life (although this is normal to us!) We also would love to create an homage to humans birthing humans. The most incredible thing anyone can do.

Birth photographers are longing to be accepted by brands the same way other niches are. By becoming a Sponsor, I’m offering you an opportunity to tap into a market that no sponsor has tapped in to yet. We are a group of dedicated birth workers who LOVE our gear and creative teams hard. When a brand recognises that we, too, are a part of the larger photographic industry, we become the most loyal of customers because we have received validation that we are not a hobby but rather sustaining our families too.

Our entrants hold this award in super high regards. Despite me creating this event during a long exhaustive 2020-Victorian-lock-down-shower-cry-sesh, entrants did not care that there was no prize money, overly lavish giveaways or trophies. They entered for the growth they new they would get with this type of live-feedback-style-judging. Saying the entrants loved it is an understatement. This year, we want to meet their energy and reward our industry leading photographers the same as other genre leaders are rewarded, such as newborn, wedding, and portrait photographers. The only way to meet the high energy of our entrants is with sponsors. We want to add trophies, a cash prize, and properly compensate our team of expert judges and team for the enormous amount of time it takes to pull of a competition of this calibre. We want to bring a sense of tangibility to our entrants. I don’t simply want to create another ‘online competition,’ but I want to create a level of prestige that the birth photography genre has yet to experience yet. The same way the rest of the photographic industry experiences merits and awards. By introducing this kind of tangibility means an exponential increase in costs

This is our industry niche’s legitimacy legacy. This is our genre is coming to bat with the rest of the photographic niches.

Our entrants hold this awards experience so highly that I wanted to share with you first hand what this ‘little’ competition is doing for our community of birth photographers. This awards event is exactly what our niche needs. Especially right now, in a time of uncertainty where we are frequently being denied entry into our local hospitals and home-births due to the pandemic.
